Education on Cognitive Development & Ambidextrous Training

Train the Brain. Sharpen the Body.

At The Athletic Edge, we believe that high-level performance begins in the brain. Cognitive development and ambidexterity training are often overlooked components in athletic preparation — yet they play a foundational role in focus, reaction time, coordination, and long-term adaptability.

This training isn't about gimmicks. It’s about enhancing the brain-body connection through intentional, science-based methods that challenge both hemispheres of the brain and improve motor control, memory, and mental clarity.

Whether you're looking to improve your non-dominant side, gain quicker decision-making on the field, or simply become a sharper, more efficient mover — this work gives you an edge few others are training.

What We Train

Our sessions include focused brain-based drills rooted in Whole Brain Power.  Whole Brain Power is a cognitive training methodology developed by author and researcher Michael Lavery. It’s designed to activate and strengthen both hemispheres of the brain through deliberate, coordinated physical and mental tasks:

  • Ambidextrous Handwriting Drills – Train the non-dominant hand to write cursive and mirror dominant patterns to balance brain hemispheres and develop control and precision.

  • Hand-Eye Coordination Work – Precision ball drills, rebound tasks, and reaction-based games to improve spatial awareness and reflexes.

  • Mirror Drills & Bilateral Movement – Activities that challenge symmetry, motor planning, and balance across both sides of the body.

  • Memory & Focus Exercises – Word recall games, number patterns, and visualization practices to boost retention, attention span, and processing speed.

  • Non-Dominant Side Skill Development – Targeted movement work for your non-dominant foot or hand (especially relevant for soccer, basketball, golf or racquet sports).

Benefits for Athletes

Cognitive development and ambidexterity training offer powerful, game-changing benefits for athletes across every sport:

  • Improved Focus & Concentration:                                                                                                   Train your attention span and ability to stay present — especially in high-pressure situations.

  • Faster Decision-Making:                                                                                                                                            Sharpen reaction time and on-the-fly processing for quicker, smarter decisions during play.

  • Enhanced Coordination & Balance:                                                                                                                              Strengthen proprioception and bilateral control to become a more fluid, efficient mover.

  • Increased Skill Versatility:                                                                                                                                                              Improve use of the non-dominant hand/foot for more dynamic, unpredictable play.

  • Greater Brain-Body Connection:                                                                                                                                                Build awareness, rhythm, and timing — allowing the mind to guide the body with precision.

  • Mental Endurance:                                                                                                                                                                Strengthen mental stamina and discipline to maintain peak cognitive performance throughout long matches, games, or training sessions.

Why It Matters

Cognitive training isn’t just mental — it has a direct physical impact. By engaging both hemispheres of the brain, athletes improve coordination, decision-making, and motor control. Ambidextrous development boosts spatial awareness and reduces over-reliance on one side of the body, creating more balanced and adaptable movers.

This type of training also builds patience, focus, and discipline — crucial for handling pressure, staying present in competition, and adapting quickly in chaotic environments.

At The Athletic Edge, we’re not just training athletes — we’re developing complete performers. Cognitive development isn’t extra; it’s essential. Train your mind with the same intention you train your body — and unlock performance at a level you didn’t know was possible.
